93views
Forgetting your MacBook password is frustrating, but Apple has built in several ways to reset it and regain access — even if you’re locked out completely.
We’ll cover Apple ID reset, Recovery Mode, and FileVault options so you can get back in quickly.
Method 1: Reset Using Apple ID
If you linked your Apple ID to your Mac account:
- On the login screen, enter any password three times.
- You’ll see “Reset using your Apple ID.”
- Click it, sign in, and set a new password.
Method 2: macOS Recovery Reset
- Restart and hold Command + R (Intel) or Power button (Apple Silicon).
- In Recovery, choose Utilities > Terminal.
- Type:nginxCopyEdit
resetpassword - Select your account and set a new password.
Method 3: FileVault Recovery Key
If FileVault is enabled:
- At the login screen, choose Use Recovery Key and enter the code you saved when enabling FileVault.
Method 4: Another Admin Account
If another admin exists on the Mac, they can change your password via System Settings > Users & Groups.
Data Warning
If none of these methods work and you erase the Mac, all files will be lost unless you have a backup.
Troubleshooting
- Apple ID option not showing? Your account might not be linked — use Recovery Mode.
- FileVault key missing? You’ll need to erase the Mac and restore from backup.
